Florence Elizabeth “Betty” Burris, 96, of New Haven, West Virginia, passed away on Sunday, October 26, 2025. Born January 31, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Grace (Cook) Roush. Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 71 years, Pete Burris; her son, John (Ann) Burris; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Albert (Erma) Roush and Dick (Peggy) Roush; and her in-laws, Howard and Clara (Elias) Burris. She is survived by her daughter, Becky Chenoweth (Bob), and her son, Joe Burris (Lisa); five grandchildren, Megan Boucher (Tim), Jason Burris (Kristin), Maggie Chenoweth, Luke Burris (Maggie), and Anthony Ragalyi; and six great-grandchildren, Bradley, Ryan, Caroline, Reed, Chase, and Harper.
Betty grew up on a dairy farm in Letart, where she spent her early years helping her family serve homemade ice cream at their “Ice Cream Patch.” As a small child, she walked to a one-room schoolhouse, where she often helped younger students. This was the beginning of her desire to become a teacher.
A 1946 graduate of Wahama High School, Betty earned her degree in home economics, with a minor in chemistry, from West Virginia Wesleyan College. She was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority and completed graduate studies at Ohio University and Marshall University. She taught home economics and science for 35 years at Wahama Junior/Senior High School, inspiring generations of students with her kindness, patience, and dedication.
A devoted member of New Haven United Methodist Church, Betty served as Sunday School treasurer, Vacation Bible School teacher and storyteller, and member of the United Methodist Women. She was also a charter member of the Nehaclima Garden Club in New Haven.
Betty was a godly mother whose faith and love guided her family and all who knew her. She was a gifted cook, known for her homemade berry pies, apple dumplings, and noodles, and was happiest when preparing big family meals when everyone could be home together. She was blessed with many loyal friends who continued to visit and stay close after she moved to assisted living—a reflection of the kindness and love she shared throughout her life.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Betty’s memory to New Haven United Methodist Church (P.O. Box 327, New Haven, WV 25265).
There will be a graveside service at Graham Cemetery on Saturday, November 1, 2025 at 11:00am with Pastor Annette Carper and Pastor Sabrina Tenney officiating. Arrangements are by Anderson-McDaniel Funeral Home.
