Hershel "Sonny" McClure

Hershel Blaine McClure was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He passed away at the age of 90, at his home on Aug. 13, 2026. He was the son of the late William Sylvester and Elma Mable (Arnold) McClure. He was one of 10 children.

Hershel (Sonny) was born on Dec. 18, 1935 in Benton, Holmes County Ohio. He was a graduate of Big Prairie High school. Sonny was a Christian who set a great example as to what a Christian father should be. He was active in Christian mission work and enjoyed building churches with the Carpenters for Christ and Buckeye Builders. He also worked with the Southern Baptist Convention Disaster Relief along side of the Red Cross and FEMA for many years. Sonny was a charter member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Pomeroy.  

 Sonny was known for his love for Christ, family and also working the restaurants which he and Rhojean opened in 1957 and grew with the family over time. He will be missed.

 Survivors include his loving wife of 70 years, Rhojean Virginia (Artis) McClure, one daughter Jeannie (Dick) Owen, three sons Jim (Angie) McClure, Bob (Ellen-deceased) McClure, Bill (Cherie) McClure. Also his siblings who are Sandy Stake, Judy Ferguson & Charlotte (Joe) Mowrer, along with many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by Siblings, Shirley Jane Shaffer, Opal (McClure) Lehr, Elleanor (McClure) Duncan, Cleabelle Marie McClure, Bonnie McClure and Gerald (Bud) McClure.

The viewing will be held at the Anderson-McDaniel Funeral home 590 east main street in Pomeroy, Ohio on Monday, August 17, 2026 at 11:00 AM with the funeral to follow at 12:00. Officiating the service will be Rev. John Pauley with contributions from Josh Fisher and Jonathan Owen.

Pallbearers are to be Josh Harris, Jonathan Owen, David McClure, Michael Owen, Tim McClure and Nathan McClure.
